Top Three Gardening Jobs for March

As winter loosens its grip and spring approaches, March is a pivotal month for gardeners. The ground is beginning to warm, and daylight hours are noticeably longer, signaling the perfect time to get out and prepare your garden for a bountiful year.

Here are the top three essential gardening tasks you should tackle this March:

1. Prepare and Tidy Flower Beds and Borders

March is the month to give your flower beds and borders a good spring clean and set the stage for new growth.

  • Weeding: Start early to tackle weeds before they establish deep roots. Remove any winter debris, dead leaves, and persistent perennial weeds.
  • Soil Improvement: If you haven't already, apply a thick layer of well-rotted compost or manure around existing plants. This helps to suppress weeds, retain moisture, and slowly release nutrients into the soil.
  • Pruning: Cut back any remaining dead growth from herbaceous perennials. For shrubs like roses, this is a crucial time for hard pruning to encourage healthy, strong new shoots. Make sure you use clean, sharp tools.
  • Edge Up: Define the edges of your borders for a neat and professional look.

2. Start Sowing Seeds Indoors

Get a head start on the growing season by sowing seeds of slower-growing vegetables and flowers indoors this month.

Many varieties, especially those that need a long growing season or protection from late frosts, thrive when started indoors on a sunny windowsill, in a heated propagator, or in a greenhouse.

Category Example Plants to Sow Now Notes
Vegetables Tomatoes, Peppers, Aubergines Needs warmth and light; transplant outside after last frost.
Flowers Sweet Peas, Geraniums, Petunias Start early for blooms in the summer.
Herbs Basil, Parsley, Chives Use small pots or trays; keep soil consistently moist.

3. Prepare Vegetable Patches and Plant Early Crops

Your vegetable garden requires immediate attention in March to prepare for summer crops.

  • Digging and Raking: If your soil is dry enough, lightly dig or fork over vegetable beds that were left fallow over winter. Break up large clumps and rake the surface to a fine, level tilth.
  • Planting Seed Potatoes: Towards the end of the month, you can plant 'early' seed potatoes. This should be a scheduled activity you can add to your calendar: Calendar event. First, 'chit' them (allow them to sprout) in a cool, bright spot for a few weeks before planting.
  • Direct Sowing: Certain hardy crops can be sown directly into the ground now, as long as the soil isn't waterlogged or frozen. These include:
    • Broad beans
    • Spinach
    • Carrots and parsnips (in well-prepared soil)
    • Hardy lettuces

Remember that March weather can be unpredictable. Be ready to protect any early outdoor sowings with fleece or cloches if a hard frost is forecast.
