April 2023 Speakers
We were very lucky to have two speakers at our April 2023 meeting.
A presentation about Canine Partners, the Gardening club charity for this year, was given by Glynis Myall who has been a volunteer with the charity for 11 years. Glynis explained that many people living with difficulties carrying out everyday activities, caused by injuries, strokes and illnesses, are partnered with a canine partner. Some partnerships are created through charities such as Help the Heroes and The British Legion, and a couple of dogs have been to the Invictus Games. (https://invictusgamesfoundation.org/ )
The process of socializing and training puppies starts at the training centre based near Ashby de la Zouch. Many members of the public help with this process by having puppies living in their homes, supported by the charity, for the first 14 months for initial socializing which includes using public transport and other community activities. After this time they then spend about 20 weeks at the training centre learning core skills, and partner specific skills. They are even taught to do contactless payments!
A marvellous charity dealing with everyday issues, giving independence to a lot of people. If you would like more information, please go to https://caninepartners.org.uk/ . They have open mornings so you can go along and find out for yourself…and maybe even offer your help.
Our second speaker was Paul Green, from Green leaves Nursery, about Seasonal Plants. He discussed a range of plants, many of which he had brought with him to show, and how the weather conditions affect them. We have had many freaky weather conditions which have taken its toll. A lot of excellent information was given with good humour.
The annual Spring Basket Competition, voted for by the members, was won by Linda Barrett with a beautiful display.
