Children’s Sunflower Competition 2021
Although we were unable to hold our annual show this year, we decided to try a new children’s class anyway which was to grow the largest sunflower seed head. Rather than the original idea of bringing the seed head to the annual show, we decided to ask for a photograph of the seed head with a rule placed across the diameter. This allowed the competition to proceed under any remaining pandemic restrictions without the need to visit children’s homes.
We sent a few “Giant Single” sunflower seeds to all of the children who entered the 2018 and 2019 annual shows in the early spring with some growing and aftercare tips. We asked for photographs to be sent by early September and at the following general committee meeting we declared the winner. Sadly 4 entries of the 7 received did not comply with the rules and were unfortunately disqualified. The winning entry measuring a whopping 26cm was from 5-year-old Harvey Collins. The sunflower was grown on Dad Darren’s allotment plot and Dad suspects that Harvey watered the sunflower with some of his tomato feed which obviously paid dividends. Harvey was presented with a prize card, rosette and £10 prize money. He also gets the BGC Sunflower Trophy to hold for a year.
The pictures show Harvey with his sunflower plant and the photograph of the seed head showing the size. The presentation was made by Anne Brett BGC Treasurer and show committee member and Bob Gwynn BGC Show Manger. Also pictured is Harvey with Mum Michelle and Dad Darren.
The runners up were Willow and Barney Barratt. Thanks also for entries from Harry and George Wilkinson and Leo and Rose Woodhouse. To all entrants, please make sure you pay attention to the rules in future.
We will be running the competition again next year and hopefully the flower heads will be brought to and measured at the 2022 annual show on Saturday 20th August at Hastings High School in Burbage.
